COMMUNITY-BASED APPROACH
We work with individuals at places where they need the support, which may be home, workplace, day program or community. The goal of community-based therapy is to help individuals communicate as they go about their daily lives. The benefit of using the community setting is that it will be functional and meaningful to the individual. For instance, using a communication device to order food and drink in one’s favourite café.
Research shows that positive outcomes are optimised and retained in the approach of community-based therapy. This is because community-based therapy allows individuals to learn the skill in the setting where it’s needed so generalisation happens naturally in the real world setting. It also encourages family and carer participation, as it gives them a chance to be the expert, by focusing on activities they regularly participate in, which empowers them to continue the work once the session is completed.
